Department of Fisheries Resources, Economics, Statistics and Extension Education

The Department undertakes undergraduate and post-graduate teaching, research and extension activities for the stakeholders.

The total sanctioned staff of department is eight, of which one is professor, two are Associate Professor and five are Assistant professor. Department undertakes undergraduate and Post-graduate teaching programme. Courses related to extension, economics, statistics, marketing and computer sciences are offered by the department at Undergraduate level, while M. F. Sc. is offered in two disciplines such as Fisheries Extension and Fisheries Economics and Ph.D is offered in Fisheries Extension. The intake capacity for M. F. Sc. programme in the discipline of Fisheries Extension is four and for the Fisheries Economics is two. Intake capacity of the Ph. D. programme in Fisheries Extension is two. The department has smart class room and computer laboratory to run the educational programme of the department.

The department has completed 08 inhouse research projects in the discipline of social sciences and has given four recommendations for the society. The department also implements externally funded research projects. Till-to-date departments has completed three research project funded by Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad, two research components funded by JSW Energy, one research project funded by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited and one project funded under NAIP, ICAR. Professor of the department has worked as Co-investigator in the Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad funded project of Department of Fisheries Biology. Professor and Head of the department is working as co-investigator in the project entitled “Development of brood stock of Silver pomfret (Pampus argenteus, Euphrasen, 1788) and rabbit fish (Siganus vermiculatus, Valenciennes, 1835)” funded by All India Network Project for Mariculture.

Department undertake on-campus and off-campus extension activities like method demonstrations, trainings, workshops, awareness campaigns, fisherman rallies etc. for the fisher community on various subjects. Till-to-date department has completed more than hundred extension programmes for the benefit of society. The department has implemented three externally funded projects in the field of extension. To undertake extension activities, an extension centre has been established under RKVY project worth of Rs. 3.60 crores in the college premises which is equipped with modern classroom, processing laboratory, aquaculture laboratory, computer laboratory, conference hall and residential arrangement of 25 trainees as well as five faculties. The department has implemented the externally funded project entitled “Capacity building of local fisher community in sustainable fishing practices along the coast of Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra state, India.” funded by UNDP. In addition to this demonstrations on crab fattening were under taken through ATMA funded project.
