Research Facilities

The college has various laboratories and farm facilities for undertaking research work of post graduate students and institutional as well as externally funded projects. In addition, the laboratories and farm facilities of research stations are also used. The details are summarized below:

PG laboratories at College of Fisheries
1 Wet Laboratory 442 m2 Research experiments related to breeding, larval and post-larval rearing, culture systems and nutritional studies are undertaken. Water quality analysis for the parameters such as temperature, pH, DO, total alkalinity and total hardness are undertaken.
2 Algal Culture Laboratory 10 m2 Culture of marine phytoplankton such as Isochrysis, Nannochloropsisis undertaken.
3 Disease Diagnostic Laboratory 40 m2 Work related to DNA and RNA isolation, quantification of nucleic acids, PCR technique for diagnosis of important diseases of finfishes and shellfishes, gel electrophoresis of nucleic acids, PAGE analysis of proteins, Western Blotting, practicals on bioinformatics analysis is undertaken.
4 Feed Analysis Laboratory 21 m2 Proximate composition of feed ingredients, feeds, aquatic organisms, flocs.
5 Biotechnology Laboratory 30 m2 Fisheries biotechnology-related work such as DNA isolation, purification, characterization, PCR amplification, DNA fingerprinting, DNA barcoding, etc
6 Microbiology Laboratory 30 m2 Isolation, enumeration and screening of microbial pathogens E. coli,Salmonella, Vibrio etc. are undertaken
7 By Product & Value addition Laboratory 400 m2 Studies on by-products like silage, chitin, fish meal and various value added products like cutlet, coated products, fish wada, fish/ prawn pickle, etc. are carried out
8 Fish Processing Hall 50 m2 The activities like peeling of shrimps, dressing of fishes, preparation of fillets, minced meat preparation, etc. are undertaken.
9 Product Development Laboratory cum Modular 21 m2 Novel fish product development and research
Kitchen
10 Thermal Processing laboratory 21 m2 Thermal processing of fishery products using canning, retorting, and modified atmospheric packaging.
11 Fisheries Hydrography Laboratory 58.5 m2 Estimations of water and soil parameters, bioassay experiments, plankton analysis, etc. are undertaken.
12 Computer Laboratory 21 m2 Socio-economic data analysis and SAS statistical analysis
13 Central Instrumentation Cell 21 m2 Determination of pollutants using AAS, HPLC and spectrophotometer.
14 Fish Processing and Biochemistry Lab at College of Fisheries 81 m2 Proximate composition, biochemical analysis TMA, TVB-N and other biochemical parameters like TBA, PV, glucose; sarcoplasmic, myofibrillar proteins, SDS PAGE, functional properties, histamine & bio-toxins, are studied.
15 Feed Mill at MBRS, Ratnagiri 66 m2 Preparation of different kinds of extruded feeds
16 Fisheries Engineering Laboratory at College of Fisheries 42 m2 Studies related to scale drawing of different types of fishing gears, model net calculations, calculations of energy requirements of different gears, fishing gears through models of nets, design of otter boards and other accessories, deck lay outs of different types of fishing vessels and preparation of sketches and calculation of various dimensions of fishing vessels are done.
